Sorry nobody got back to you, you wouldn't even need to flash a different firmware per se.
Simply connect your LeapPad to your PC via USB and run the Official Leapfrog Software,
head into the settings menu and click the Factory Reset Option(Warning: you will lose all data on the device.)
When setting up the device, be sure to click the Union Jack to set your locale to en-us.
I'm sure there's an FTP way to do this by editing the meta.inf that belongs to your
A. DiskImage or B. Firmware
and changing the Locale="whatever-french-is" to Locale="en-us" that would NOT require you to wipe all data from the device, however I don't have FTP access to my device currently so am unable to test this theory.
